Lama Zopa Rinpoche's video in support of the Monastery

a long story

40 years of history

For about forty years the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism has received the sincere interest of many Western practitioners and scholars in Italy.

Lama Yeshe and Geshe Jampa Gyatso came up with the idea of building a monastery for monks and nuns while they were together in Kopan, Nepal, in the late 70s. That vision is now taking shape in a disused quarry in Pomaia, about 2 km from the Lama Tzong Khapa Institute. We have found the ideal site to build the future monastery which will be built on the rock just like the monasteries of Tibet.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born on 6 July 1935 to a peasant family in the small village of Taktser, in northeastern Tibet. At the age of two he was recognized as the reincarnation of his predecessor.

Our Sangha is inspired by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, creators of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) and our guides.

Geshe Jampa Gyatso

Geshe Jampa Gyatso, resident teacher of the Lama Tzong Khapa Institute for 27 years, was our first abbot, and the main inspirer of the monastic community and of the Sangha Onlus Association.
